Human Nature
A Survey of Perspectives
Abstract
For most of documented history there has been exploration into the question of human nature. In our modern context, the answer to what makes a human a human is the concern of both religious and non-religious people alike. In times past, an assumption was made that humans were made by supernatural beings, or gods. In recent times, the onset of post-enlightenment sentiments has created a study of human nature separated from any supernatural connections. Yet the question remains, what makes a human a human? It is my intention to explore this question and provide a tentative position. In this paper I will argue that human nature is best understood in terms of the imago dei of Scripture because the imago dei provides a robust revelatory framework with which to understand humanity.
