Revelation 5:1-7

An Exegetical Exploration

Abstract

Revelation 5 represents the best of Biblical literature. It is dense—literarily, linguistically, rhetorically, theologically, imaginatively, etc. Nowhere else in the book is the author’s artistry as powerful as the throne room seen of chapter 5. In this chapter, the reader is presented with a magnificent vista of theophanic glory. There are heavenly beings, a mysterious scroll, proclamations, challenges, singing, worship, and, at the center of it all, a victorious leonine lamb. Much ink has been spilled contemplating the identification of elements of this passage, including the scroll and lion-lamb. This exegetical exploration will explore this challenging passage and all its intricacies, revealing the surprisingly universal victory of the lamb and its subversive identity.
